Elmo Johnson, pastor of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church in inner-city Houston, talks with neighbors on the street. Elmo Johnson rejects any personal credit for the in Houston’s 4th Ward since he arrived as pastor of Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church 30 years ago. However, he’s eager to give God the glory.

Several suburban churches provide volunteers and support to the Rose of Sharon congregation, aiding its community ministries. "The Lord has accomplished great here," Johnson remarked. Three decades ago, drug deals were common on street corners, and addicts sought refuge in deteriorating row houses in the historically African-American neighborhood once as Freedmen’s Town. “It started as Freedmen’s Town, evolved into the 4th Ward, and now is called Midtown,” he explained. In the past ten years, the area has attracted young professionals moving into newly constructed high-rise condos and townhouses. This housing in the 4th Ward likely wouldn't have happened without initiatives of Rose of Sharon and its nonprofit, Uplift 4th Ward. In 2006, they, along with numerous partners, the Crawford W. Kimble Senior Living complex to support low-income residents. Uplift 4th Ward and its partners also constructed more housing for low- moderate-income families in the area. Prior to the most recent ham distribution, Johnson invited Houston Police Department officers to join in, their presence particularly significant following a grand jury's decision not to indict a police officer involved in a fatal shooting in Ferguson, Mo. "We had to drive the drug dealers out, renovate old houses, and reclaim this community," said Pastor Elmo Johnson. In recent years, crime has decreased in the 4th Ward, and Johnson aims to strengthen between residents and police, transforming the neighborhood he began serving30 years ago. “We’ve seen remarkable improvement. It’s a cleaner neighborhood. Change is challenging, but it’s essential,” he stated. “Change must happen. God is a God of change.” Johnson lik community transformation to the biblical journey of the Israelites, emphasizing the need for effort to claim the promises of God. Initially, Rose of Sharon faced resistance in its mission to instigate change, but through consistent service, it gained respect. “Do what’s right for the community, and they will see your goodwill. church has never been broken in. When you feed and clothe people, they recognize your intentions,” Johnson said. Due to its strong reputation, multiple suburban churches actively support Rose of Sharon's ministries, which include providing meals to the homeless twice a week and running a benevolence program offering food and clothing to those in need.
